Treasury Registrar Nehemiah Mchechu has directed the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to improve efficiency and accountability, with the Government seeking greater value from its investment in road infrastructure.
Mr Mchechu issued the directive on Friday, September 18, 2026, during a meeting with TANROADS management at the Office of the Treasury Registrar (OTR) in Dar es Salaam.
The TANROADS delegation was led by the agency’s Chief Executive Officer, Eng Mohamed Besta.
The meeting focused on measures to strengthen the agency’s performance, productivity and accountability in implementing its responsibilities, according to a statement issued after the meeting.
The directive puts greater emphasis on how efficiently TANROADS manages public resources and delivers road infrastructure, which is critical to the movement of people and goods and the wider economy.
The Treasury Registrar said the measures should help ensure that government investment in roads generates greater value, while strengthening the agency’s performance and accountability.
The push comes amid continued government spending on infrastructure, making effective project implementation and prudent management of public resources important to taxpayers and road users.
TANROADS is responsible for managing the country’s national road network and implementing major road infrastructure projects.
The quality and pace of its work therefore have a direct bearing on connectivity, transport costs and access to markets and services across the country.
The meeting was also part of the OTR’s oversight responsibilities over public institutions and companies in which the Government has interests.
The OTR currently oversees 308 institutions and companies, including entities in which the Government holds minority shares.
Mr Mchechu’s directive signals closer attention to the performance of institutions under the Treasury Registrar’s oversight, particularly on whether they are delivering the expected value from public investments.
For TANROADS, the focus will be on translating the directive into practical improvements in efficiency, accountability and productivity in the management and delivery of road infrastructure.
