Arusha Airport is set to operate around the clock after the completion of a lighting project, a development expected to improve air connectivity and strengthen the region’s tourism and investment prospects.
Arusha Regional Commissioner Amos Makalla confirmed the completion of the project on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after inspecting the newly installed lighting system at the airport.
Mr Makalla said the project fulfils a commitment made by President Samia Suluhu Hassan during the 2025 General Election campaigns, adding that its completion would give passengers and airlines greater flexibility when planning flights to and from Arusha.
“I have inspected the facility, switched on the lights and confirmed that they are all functioning. The airport is safe and ready for use,” Mr Makalla said.
He said the ability to handle flights at night would be particularly important as Arusha prepares to host major international events, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly and activities linked to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The development is also expected to benefit the tourism sector by making it easier for international and domestic travellers to reach Arusha, one of Tanzania’s key gateways to major tourist attractions.
Mr Makalla said improved airport operations would support tourism, trade and investment by enabling visitors and business travellers to access the region with fewer restrictions linked to daylight operating hours.
“Participants coming for the IPU Assembly and AFCON will be able to fly directly into Arusha, making their travel easier,” he said.
Arusha Airport Manager Edgar Mwankuga said the extended operating hours would have economic benefits beyond aviation, including increased business activity and higher revenue for the government.
He said the airport’s ability to operate 24 hours would provide airlines with greater flexibility in scheduling flights while creating opportunities for businesses involved in tourism, transport and hospitality.
The project comes as Tanzania continues to invest in infrastructure to support tourism and prepare for major international events expected to attract visitors and participants from across the world.
For Arusha residents and businesses, the airport upgrade could translate into easier access to air transport, longer operating hours and increased economic activity linked to the region’s tourism and business sectors.
