The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr Tulia Ackson, has pledged continued support to Burkina Faso’s Parliament as the country works to strengthen democratic institutions and address security and humanitarian challenges.
Dr Tulia made the commitment during talks with the Speaker of Burkina Faso’s Parliament, Dr Ousmane Bougouma, in Ouagadougou, where the two leaders discussed ways to deepen cooperation between IPU and the country’s legislative body.
The meeting focused on strengthening parliamentary capacity, improving legislative processes and enhancing the role of Parliament in promoting good governance and responding to citizens’ needs.
Dr Tulia said her visit was aimed at expressing solidarity with the people of Burkina Faso, the government and Parliament during a period marked by security challenges.
She commended efforts by Burkina Faso’s authorities to restore peace and stability, including regional cooperation with Mali and Niger in tackling terrorism threats.
“The IPU remains ready to support efforts that strengthen peace, stability and effective parliamentary governance,” Dr Tulia said, highlighting the importance of strong institutions in addressing national challenges.
She also recognised Burkina Faso’s institutional progress, particularly steps towards establishing a stronger parliamentary system, saying the development reflected the country’s commitment to improving governance and meeting citizens’ expectations.
Dr Tulia said IPU would continue working with Burkina Faso’s Parliament through programmes aimed at building the capacity of lawmakers and parliamentary staff.
The programmes will focus on strengthening law-making processes, improving government oversight and equipping Parliament to effectively address security concerns while ensuring wider public participation.
The engagement between Dr Tulia and Dr Bougouma underscores the growing partnership between IPU and Burkina Faso’s Parliament in promoting inclusive governance, institutional resilience and parliamentary systems that better serve citizens.
