A Water Ministry officer, his wife, and their four-year-old child have died after their home was destroyed by fire in Nyarusrya Street, Musoma Municipality, Mara Region.
The victims have been identified as 39-year-old Rochi Mkolekuwa, Water Quality Manager at the Mara Regional Laboratory, his 34-year-old wife, Mariam Msigwa, and their child, Rochi Shaban.
Acting Regional Fire and Rescue Commander, Agostino Magere, confirmed the incident, saying the cause of the fire is still unknown. Investigations have already begun.
Magere said the fire was reported at 10:00 p.m. on Monday, January 5, 2026. “When we arrived, the house was completely burnt. The father’s body was found in the living room, while the mother and child were in the bedroom. Sadly, they had already passed away,” he said.
Water Minister Jumaa Aweso expressed deep sorrow over the loss. Through his official Facebook page, he described Mkolekuwa as a dedicated and hardworking officer who served the ministry with distinction.
“I have publicly commended him several times for his excellent performance. His passing is a huge loss to the water sector,” Minister Aweso said. “My heartfelt condolences go to his family, relatives, friends, and all water sector staff in Mara Region and across the country.”
