The Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Ambassador Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, has expressed serious concern over the management and operational standards at the Buzirayombo International Livestock Market in Chato, Geita Region.
During an inspection visit on January 4, 2026, Dr. Bashiru noted that the market’s facilities remain underutilized despite significant government investment.
He particularly criticized the absence of water supply and the failure of traders to use weighing scales during livestock sales.
“I expect this market to have a functioning water system within two weeks. The infrastructure is in place, the water source is available, and the storage tank exists, yet there is no water at a project valued at TZS 4 billion. We should not have commenced operations without completing the water system,” Dr. Bashiru stated.
The Minister also expressed frustration over traders refusing to use the weighing scales, which were funded by the government to ensure transparency and fair trade.
“You cannot invest heavily in weighing scales and then see them ignored. On a previous visit to Kagera, I personally confirmed with local residents that livestock had never been brought here before. It is unacceptable to leave these facilities unused,” he said.
Dr. Bashiru instructed the Ministry’s Engineer, Mr. George Kwandu, to provide a detailed report on the first phase of the market’s construction.
This report will guide the implementation of the second phase, which is expected to complete the remaining infrastructure and fully operationalize the market.
The Buzirayombo market, once fully functional, is expected to strengthen livestock trade in the Lake Zone, enhance revenue collection, and provide a model for modern livestock marketing across Tanzania.
