Former Taifa Stars goalkeeper Steven Nemes has urged Tanzanians to remain patient and optimistic as the national football team gears up for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to kick off on August 2, 2025, at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking to The Respondent Online, Nemes encouraged fans to support the team with unwavering loyalty throughout the tournament—regardless of the match outcomes—emphasizing that the final whistle, not the early minutes, determines the result.
“I want to urge all Tanzanians to be patient and not lose hope if the opposing team scores first. Let’s support our players with energy and confidence all the way to the final whistle, which is when the true result is decided,” said Nemes.
He noted that many local fans tend to become discouraged when the national team falls behind early, which can affect the morale of the players.
“We often celebrate when things go our way, but the moment we concede a goal, people start to give up. That’s not the spirit we need. Let’s stay strong and cheer on our team until the very end,” he added.
Nemes expressed confidence in the current Taifa Stars squad, praising their youthful energy, strong morale, and the technical abilities of the coaching team.
He believes the team is well-positioned to perform strongly, especially with the tournament being held on home soil.
“This is a well-prepared team with motivated young players and a technical bench that knows the game. Playing at home gives us an added advantage, and we must make the most of it,” he said.
He further noted that Tanzania stands out in comparison to some other countries, where most national team players are foreign-based professionals.
In contrast, many of Tanzania’s players are regularly involved in both domestic and international competitions, which gives the team cohesion and experience.
“In our squad, the majority of players have participated in both major and minor international tournaments, and many are home-based. In other countries, 70 to 80 percent of the players come from overseas clubs. That gives us a unique advantage,” Nemes explained.
He concluded by urging the players to give their all, play with heart, and defend their country's pride with a spirit of patriotism.
“Let them fight for the flag and show the world what Tanzania is capable of. With unity, belief, and hard work, we can achieve great things,” said Nemes.
