Young Africans SC (Yanga) secured a valuable 1-1 draw against Botswana’s Gaborone United on Saturday after Mwalimu struck deep into stoppage time in their CAF Champions League first-round qualifying match.
Gaborone United appeared on course for victory after Amseb put the hosts ahead in the 32nd minute.
Yanga, however, refused to give up and continued pressing for an equaliser as the match moved into its final stages.
Their persistence finally paid off in the fifth minute of added time when Mwalimu found the back of the net to rescue a draw for the Tanzanian champions.
The result keeps the tie finely poised and gives Yanga an important away result as they pursue a place in the next round of Africa’s premier club competition.
The late goal will also provide a boost to Yanga after they had spent most of the match chasing the game, while Gaborone United will be left disappointed after surrendering their lead at the final whistle.
