Seven swimming clubs have confirmed their participation in this year’s National Open Swimming Championships, setting the stage for a two-day contest expected to bring together some of the country’s leading swimmers and competitors from abroad.
The championships will be held on September 12 and 13 at the Monti International School swimming pool in Dar es Salaam, according to the Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA).
TSA Director of Education and Development Jeremiah Kaema said preparations were progressing well, with organisers encouraged by the response from clubs and swimmers.
He said the competition would provide an important platform for athletes to assess their performance and compete at a higher level as they seek to improve their prospects in national and international competitions.
“Preparations are largely complete, and we are calling on swimmers and stakeholders to get ready. We expect strong competition as we work towards achieving international standards,” Mr Kaema said.
The championships will feature swimmers from different parts of Tanzania, while participation from other countries is also expected to add an international dimension to the event.
Mr Kaema said the competition would allow swimmers to measure themselves in key areas such as speed, endurance and technique, while giving coaches an opportunity to assess athletes’ progress.
Beyond the competition for medals, he said the event was intended to help raise the standard of swimming in Tanzania by exposing local athletes to stronger competition and creating a platform for them to improve their performances.
He urged swimmers and clubs that have not yet confirmed participation to make preparations, while calling on swimming enthusiasts to turn up in large numbers and support the athletes.
Monti International School is sponsoring the championships and will host the competition at its swimming pool.
The event is expected to provide an important platform for identifying emerging talent and preparing Tanzanian swimmers for future international assignments.
