Azam FC and Simba SC renew their rivalry tomorrow in the Mzizima Derby, with both sides seeking a victory that could strengthen their push for an early advantage in the NBC Premier League.
The match at Azam Complex in Chamazi comes with pressure on both teams, who are expected to battle for control of the midfield and create chances in what promises to be a closely contested encounter.
For Azam, the game offers an opportunity to turn home advantage into three points, while Simba will be looking to build on the confidence gained from their recent international outing.
Azam coach Florent Ibenge described the fixture as a major test, saying Simba have the quality and experience to make the contest difficult.
Ibenge, however, said his players had prepared well and would approach the game with a clear plan aimed at neutralising Simba’s strengths.
“Tomorrow we are going to play a big game, and I really enjoy matches like this. It is a big game for Tanzania,” Ibenge said.
Azam goalkeeper Aishi Manula acknowledged Simba’s quality but insisted that his team would focus on competing for the result rather than being distracted by their opponents’ recent form.
Manula said Simba’s latest international performance, in which they scored several goals, had boosted their confidence and excited their supporters.
“We know the quality of our opponents, but we are going to fight. The 90 minutes will decide who leaves with the three points,” Manula said.
Simba coach Steve Barker said his side was ready for the challenge, describing Azam as a strong team led by an experienced coach.
He said the quality of the two sides should make the derby an entertaining and highly competitive contest.
Barker also called on Simba supporters to fill the stands and provide the same backing they gave the team in Sunday’s match.
“We are prepared to face a big team. Azam have a good coach with a lot of experience, so we expect a difficult game,” Barker said.
Simba player Nathael Chilambo said the squad understood the importance of the fixture and had prepared accordingly.
He said the players would approach the game with determination and fight for maximum points.
“We know it will be a difficult match, but we are ready to fight and make sure we get a good result,” Chilambo said.
