Minister for Works Abdallah Ulega has urged Tanzanians to take collective responsibility for protecting public development projects, saying the sustainability of government investments depends not only on funding but also on how well communities preserve the infrastructure built for their benefit.
Speaking during a two-day tour to inspect development projects in Iringa Region, where he serves as the government's regional patron, Mr Ulega said schools, health facilities, government offices and other public infrastructure are national assets that should be protected to ensure they continue serving future generations.
"The government has invested substantial resources to improve public services. I call upon citizens to work with the government in safeguarding these projects against vandalism, misuse and neglect," he said.
The minister said the government remains committed to financing infrastructure and social service projects across the country to improve service delivery, stimulate economic activity and enhance the quality of life.
He noted that while the government provides the financial resources for construction, local communities have an equally important role in ensuring the facilities are maintained and used responsibly.
Residents who attended the events welcomed the continued investment in their communities, saying the projects would improve access to education and healthcare while creating opportunities for local economic development.
Iringa Regional Commissioner Kheri James thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for appointing Mr Ulega as the region's patron, saying the arrangement has strengthened follow-up on government priorities and accelerated the implementation of key development projects.
During the visit, Mr Ulega laid the foundation stone for the Kilolo District Commissioner's Office, the maternity and surgical building at FRELIMO Hospital, and the Mother and Child Building at Mtwango Health Centre.
He also launched the construction of Ugwachanya Secondary School, a new pre-primary and primary school at Ngwazi Secondary School in Mufindi District, and commissioned two science laboratories at Nyamalala Secondary School in Mafinga.
The projects form part of the government's broader efforts to expand access to quality public services and strengthen infrastructure in Iringa Region.
