Traditional elders from 12 clans in Tarime District, Mara Region, have appealed to President Samia Suluhu Hassan to consider releasing CHADEMA Chairman Tundu Lissu, saying reconciliation and dialogue remain important pillars for strengthening national unity and peace.
The elders made the appeal on Thursday, July 16, 2026, while addressing journalists in Tarime, where they also called on citizens to protect Tanzania’s peace and stability, which they described as a foundation for economic and social development.
Speaking on behalf of the Nyabasi clan, Elder Moris Mung’osi said their request was based on President Samia’s 4R philosophy of Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms and Rebuilding.
“We are asking President Samia Suluhu Hassan, through her reconciliation approach, to consider the situation of Tundu Lissu, who has been in custody for a long time. We believe he may have reflected on what has happened and we request that he be considered for release,” Mung’osi said.
The elders said reconciliation efforts could help strengthen national unity and create an environment where differences are addressed through dialogue and peaceful engagement.
Elder Joseph Maricha from the Bumera clan commended efforts to maintain peace in the country, urging young people to avoid being drawn into activities that could disrupt public order.
He said peace remains a key factor in attracting investment, implementing development projects and improving citizens’ livelihoods.
“We should protect the peace we have because development depends on stability. Young people should focus on opportunities that contribute to their future and the progress of the nation,” Maricha said.
Meanwhile, Elder Charles Mwita Mugogo from the Bukimbaru clan praised the government’s development initiatives, saying continued investment in infrastructure and social services requires a peaceful environment.
He urged political actors and citizens to promote responsible engagement and avoid actions that could threaten national harmony.
The elders said traditional leaders will continue working with communities to promote unity, cooperation and peaceful coexistence, while encouraging citizens to participate in activities that support Tanzania’s development.
Their appeal adds to ongoing national conversations on reconciliation, political tolerance and strengthening democratic dialogue while safeguarding peace and stability.
