Tanzania seeks to digitise animal health services

By The Respondents Reporter

Tanzania is taking further steps to modernise animal health services through digital technology, as government officials and development partners work to improve the collection, management and use of veterinary data for more efficient service delivery.

The initiative was discussed during a meeting chaired by the Registrar of the Tanzania Veterinary Council, Dr Amani Kilemile, at the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries headquarters in Dodoma on July 15.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr Kilemile underscored the need for a digital platform that integrates seamlessly with existing government systems to ensure timely access to reliable data for policy formulation, disease surveillance and the delivery of veterinary services.

"We need a system that provides accurate and real-time information while complementing other government digital platforms. This will strengthen decision-making and improve the quality of animal health services," he said.

Participants assessed the performance of the current system, identifying operational gaps and opportunities for improvement as part of preparations to develop a more robust digital platform.

The discussions centred on strengthening animal health information systems, improving the management of records for veterinary professionals, expanding the delivery of digital veterinary services and enhancing coordination among institutions involved in the animal health sector.

The meeting brought together experts from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, the Tanzania Veterinary Council and development partners, including Brooke East Africa, ASPA and INADES Formation Tanzania.

The stakeholders shared technical experiences and recommendations expected to guide the development of a modern digital system that supports efficient veterinary service delivery, improves data quality and strengthens disease monitoring and response across the country.
