Muhimbili, Cambridge partner on study to improve childhood cancer care

Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) and the University of Cambridge have launched a genetic research project aimed at improving treatment outcomes for children with thyroid cancer in Tanzania and across Africa, marking a significant step towards precision medicine for African patients.

The study will investigate genetic factors that may influence how children respond to current treatments, addressing concerns that existing therapies often produce less favourable results among African patients than in other parts of the world.

Dr Advera Ngaiza, a consultant pathologist at Muhimbili, said the research will involve collecting genetic and tissue samples from children diagnosed with thyroid cancer in Tanzania.

The samples will be processed at Muhimbili's Central Laboratory before undergoing advanced molecular analysis to identify genetic characteristics that could explain differences in treatment response.

"Our goal is to identify safer, more targeted and more effective treatments for children with thyroid cancer in Africa," Dr Ngaiza said.

The findings are expected to generate evidence that could support the development of treatment approaches tailored to the genetic profiles of African populations, helping clinicians move beyond one-size-fits-all therapies.

Health experts say such research is increasingly important as precision medicine gains prominence globally, with treatments designed around patients' genetic makeup offering the potential to improve survival rates while reducing unnecessary side effects.

The collaboration between Muhimbili and the University of Cambridge is also expected to strengthen research capacity in Tanzania by expanding expertise in cancer genomics and molecular diagnostics.

If successful, the study could provide a foundation for improving childhood cancer care not only in Tanzania but across Africa, where access to evidence-based, population-specific cancer treatment remains limited.
