Tanzania's national boxing team captain, Yusuf Changalawe, launched his Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign in impressive fashion by defeating Nigeria's Ankintola David to reach the men's Light Heavyweight (80kg) Round of 16.
Changalawe produced a composed and disciplined performance to earn a 4-1 points victory over David, the reigning 2025 WBC Africa Champion, controlling the contest from the opening bell with superior tactics, movement and ring intelligence.
The win books the Tanzanian a place in the Round of 16, where he will face Kenya's Robert Okaka on July 27 for a place in the quarter-finals.
Speaking after the victory, Changalawe expressed gratitude to God, the Government, his family and Tanzanians for their unwavering support, describing the win as an important first step toward his ultimate goal.
"It was a very tough fight because my opponent is highly experienced. I thank God for helping me secure this victory, and I also thank my coach for the excellent preparation and strategy that I followed in the ring. My mission is to return home with a gold medal," he said.
Changalawe said his focus has now shifted to the crucial showdown against Okaka, adding that he will intensify his preparations to ensure he progresses further in the competition.
"I know the next bout will be another tough challenge, so I will continue working hard in training. I ask Tanzanians to keep supporting and praying for me as I strive to win a medal for our country," he added.
Changalawe's victory provides Tanzania with an encouraging start in the boxing competition as the Faru Weusi seek to make a strong impact at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
