TRA seizes 27 tonnes of smuggled Macadamia in Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro. The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has intercepted 27 tonnes of macadamia nuts that were being smuggled into the country through the Tarakea border in Rombo District, Kilimanjaro Region.

The consignment was seized during an overnight operation on April 29, 2026, after customs officers on routine patrol discovered the cargo already loaded onto two Fuso trucks, ready for illegal entry.

TRA officials said the interception was part of ongoing efforts to curb cross-border smuggling and protect the country’s economic interests.

The seized vehicles and the macadamia shipment are currently under the custody of the Customs Department as investigations continue.

Authorities have indicated that legal action will be taken against all individuals involved in the attempted smuggling.

TRA has also called on traders to adhere to established laws and procedures governing trade, warning that smuggling not only violates the law but also denies the government crucial revenue needed for national development.
