TRA seizes 148 drums of smuggled cooking oil in Tanga crackdown

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has intensified its crackdown on illegal trade after seizing 148 drums of smuggled cooking oil in Tanga Region, in an operation aimed at safeguarding government revenue and protecting consumers.

The consignment was intercepted on the night of April 30, 2026, at Mwakidila area in Tanga District by officers from TRA’s Anti-Smuggling Unit.

The cooking oil was being transported in a Toyota Hiace vehicle, allegedly in violation of importation procedures.

TRA Tanga Regional Manager, Castro John, said the seizure highlights ongoing efforts by the authority to curb smuggling, which continues to undermine fair trade and economic growth.

He warned that engaging in smuggling not only deprives the government of much-needed revenue but also exposes consumers to potentially unsafe products, as such goods often bypass inspection and certification by the Tanzania Bureau of Standards.

Mr John called on traders to adhere to lawful importation channels and ensure all taxes are duly paid, noting that compliance is key to maintaining a level playing field in the market.

TRA has in recent months stepped up enforcement operations across various regions as part of broader efforts to combat illicit trade and strengthen domestic revenue collection.
