Tanzania urges strong regional cooperation to boost nuclear energy development in Africa

By The Respondents Reporter

Tanzania has called for stronger regional cooperation in the development of nuclear energy, saying collaboration among African countries is key to ensuring access to safe, reliable and affordable electricity that can drive economic growth and industrial development.

The call was made on May 20, 2026 by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy responsible for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, while representing the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, during a ministerial panel discussion at the Second Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa (NEISA 2026) held in Kigali, Rwanda.

Speaking during the high-level discussions, Mramba said no single African country can successfully develop nuclear energy in isolation due to the high investment costs, strict safety requirements and the need for advanced technical expertise.

He stressed that cooperation between countries is essential in sharing knowledge, infrastructure and human skills needed for the sector to grow.

He noted that Tanzania is already strengthening regional power connectivity through ongoing investments in electricity interconnection projects with neighbouring countries including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Zambia.

He said these efforts aim to improve electricity trade, enhance grid stability and ensure wider access to reliable power across the region.

Mramba further emphasized the importance of investing in local experts, strong regulatory frameworks and modern energy infrastructure.

He said these efforts are critical to ensuring that nuclear energy becomes a long-term solution for supporting industrial growth, job creation and overall economic transformation in Africa.

The summit brought together energy policymakers, experts and development partners from across the continent to discuss the future of nuclear energy innovation.

It was officially opened on May 18, 2026 by the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, and is scheduled to conclude on May 21, 2026 in Kigali.
