Njombe Iron Mining projects expected to create thousands of jobs

The economy of Njombe Region is set for a major transformation following large-scale investments in iron ore mining and processing projects expected to create thousands of jobs, boost local businesses, and increase income opportunities for communities in Ludewa District.

Officials say the developments will position the region as one of Tanzania’s emerging industrial and mining hubs, driven by rich mineral deposits and growing investor interest.

The Resident Mines Officer for Njombe Region, Engineer Lucas Mlekwa, said one of the flagship projects being implemented by the National Development Corporation (NDC) in partnership with a foreign investor has already secured a large-scale mining licence following extensive geological studies conducted between 2012 and 2013.

The studies confirmed the presence of more than 126 million tonnes of iron ore, making the area one of the country’s most promising iron resources.

He said further analysis revealed additional valuable minerals associated with iron ore, including titanium and vanadium, which significantly increase the project’s overall economic value.

Mlekwa said government negotiations with investors are now in the final stages, and full implementation of the project is expected to begin within the next year.

He said the project will include iron ore extraction and the construction of a modern steel processing plant that will produce steel products for use in construction, manufacturing, and other key sectors of the economy.

According to him, the project is expected to directly and indirectly benefit local communities through increased employment and business opportunities.

Residents will participate in various services including security, transport, supply of construction materials, catering, and mining support services, in line with Tanzania’s local content policy in the mining sector.

“This is a major opportunity for citizens to participate in the value chain and benefit from the investments taking place in their area,” he said.

Mlekwa also said the Maganga Matitu iron ore project, also under NDC in partnership with a foreign investor, has reached its final stages of preparation after the investor paid more than Sh4.2 billion in compensation to residents who were relocated to pave the way for the project. The site is estimated to hold about 45 million tonnes of iron ore.

He added that Ludewa will also benefit from the Mchuchuma Coal Project, which contains more than 428 million tonnes of coal reserves earmarked for electricity generation. The project is expected to strengthen power supply for mining activities and future steel industries in the district.

Experts say the combined projects are expected to turn Njombe into a key industrial corridor, strengthen Tanzania’s self-reliance in steel production, and significantly increase government revenue while improving livelihoods for local citizens through jobs and business growth.
