President Samia Suluhu Hassan has reiterated her government’s commitment to protecting workers’ rights and improving their welfare, saying these efforts are central to boosting productivity and driving national development.
Speaking during the national celebrations of International Workers' Day held in Njombe on May 1, President Samia said the government will continue strengthening working environments while ensuring that salaries and employment benefits reflect the current economic situation.
She said workers remain a key pillar of the national economy and pledged continued reforms to safeguard their interests.
“Workers are the backbone of our economy. My government will continue to ensure your rights are protected, improve your working conditions, and promote fairness in the workplace,” she said.
President Samia also highlighted ongoing government investments in key sectors such as health, education, and infrastructure, saying the improvements are designed to enhance efficiency and ease service delivery for workers across the country.
She called on employers in both the public and private sectors to fully comply with labour laws, provide formal employment contracts, and prioritize occupational safety and health at workplaces.
“These are not optional responsibilities. They are legal and moral obligations that ensure dignity and stability for workers,” she emphasized.
Trade union leaders, who attended the event, presented several challenges affecting workers, including the rising cost of living, low wages, and limited job opportunities for young people.
They urged the government to continue implementing practical measures to address these concerns and improve living standards.
This year’s May Day celebrations were held under the theme: “Protection of Workers’ Rights as a Catalyst for National Development,” reflecting the importance of fairness, justice, and improved welfare in building a stronger workforce.
The national event brought together senior government leaders, trade union representatives, and stakeholders from various sectors of the economy.
