The Office of the Treasury Registrar (OTR) has called for increased efficiency, accountability, and productivity within public institutions as a key strategy for accelerating national development and achieving Tanzania’s Vision 2050 goals.

The call was made on Friday, May 1, 2026, during the International Workers’ Day celebrations held at Mnazi Mmoja Grounds in Dar es Salaam, which brought together government institutions, workers, and social partners under the national theme emphasizing decent work as a foundation for sustainable development.

OTR’s participation underscored the government’s continued commitment to strengthening the management of public investments and improving the performance of state-owned enterprises, which play a central role in economic growth and service delivery.

Speaking during the event, the Director of Human Resources and Administration at OTR, Chacha Marigiri, commended workers in public institutions for their contribution to national development, noting that discipline, accountability, and patriotism remain essential pillars for improving institutional performance and national progress.

He said workers in public institutions have a crucial responsibility of ensuring that government resources are properly managed and translated into tangible benefits for citizens.

“Public institutions must operate with high levels of efficiency and responsibility to ensure that government investments deliver real value to the economy and improve the lives of citizens,” he said.

Marigiri further emphasized that decent work is not only a right for employees but also a responsibility that should result in improved service delivery and stronger national development outcomes. He called on workers to uphold professionalism, integrity, and commitment in their daily duties.

The OTR also stressed the importance of enhancing good governance practices, transparency, and innovation within public institutions, noting that these elements are critical in building public trust and improving the performance of state-owned enterprises.

According to the office, under the Vision 2050 framework, public institutions are expected to become key drivers of economic growth through productive investments, timely contribution of revenues and dividends to the government, job creation, and support for social development initiatives.

The celebrations also provided a platform for stakeholders to reflect on progress made in improving working conditions and to reaffirm the need for continuous reforms in the public sector to enhance efficiency and responsiveness.

Participants noted that strengthening institutional performance remains essential for Tanzania’s ambition of becoming a higher middle-income economy, with decent work and productivity at the center of national development efforts.

OTR concluded by urging employees in public institutions to continue working with dedication, discipline, and strong ethical values, emphasizing that collective effort and efficiency will be critical in achieving national development goals in a timely and sustainable manner.
