The Tanzania Police Force has issued a stern warning against the growing misuse of social media, announcing the arrest of several individuals accused of insulting members of a national commission and engaging in other unlawful online activities.
The warning comes at a time when social media platforms are rapidly expanding as essential tools for communication and economic engagement, but are increasingly being misused in ways that threaten public order and safety.
In a statement released from Police Headquarters in Dodoma, the Police Spokesperson said that while the country continues to enjoy relative peace and stability, there is a worrying trend of individuals using digital platforms to commit offences such as fraud, harassment, abusive language and incitement.
The spokesperson noted that these actions violate both legal frameworks and societal norms, and risk undermining national cohesion if left unchecked.
Despite these challenges, the police said the overall security situation remains calm, with isolated incidents being addressed through established legal procedures.
Authorities are taking firm action under the Cybercrimes Act of 2015, which provides the legal basis for dealing with offences committed through digital platforms.
The law, according to the police, remains a critical tool in combating the rising tide of online misconduct.
In recent operations, three suspects have been arrested in Arusha, Iringa and Mbeya regions. The individuals are accused of misusing social media, including posting offensive and abusive content directed at various individuals, among them members of the commission tasked with investigating the violent incidents of October 29, 2025.
Police said investigations are ongoing and that efforts are underway to track down more suspects, particularly those involved in spreading defamatory content, hate speech and misinformation, even where they are not the original creators.
The force has urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing credible information that can assist in curbing such crimes.
Citizens have also been reminded to use social media responsibly, in line with the country’s laws and ethical standards, to avoid legal consequences.
The Police Force stressed that it will not hesitate to take decisive legal action against any individual found violating the law, regardless of their social status or position.
