Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba on April 16, 2026 officially opened the Lake Tanganyika Business and Investment Forum in Kigoma Region, bringing together government leaders, business executives and investors from across the Lake Tanganyika basin.

The forum has attracted participants from neighbouring Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania, highlighting renewed efforts to deepen regional trade and economic cooperation around Lake Tanganyika.

Opening the forum, Dr Nchemba said the initiative signals fresh momentum in strengthening partnerships among countries bordering the lake, with the aim of unlocking shared economic opportunities and accelerating sustainable development.

He said the Lake Tanganyika zone holds significant potential to become a strategic commercial corridor if investments are directed towards key sectors and cross-border collaboration is strengthened.

Dr Nchemba pointed to the vast but underexploited opportunities in Kigoma Region, including fertile agricultural land, tourism attractions, mineral resources and industrial development prospects.

He stressed that unlocking these resources could transform the region into a vibrant investment destination while contributing to national and regional economic growth.

The Prime Minister added that the government remains committed to improving the investment climate to attract both domestic and foreign investors, particularly in emerging regions such as Kigoma, which continue to show strong potential for long-term development.
