Tanzania, UK strengthen cooperation on environment and climate agenda

Tanzania is actively strengthening partnerships to promote environmental conservation and combat climate change, both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Richard Muyungi, Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Vice President (Union and Environment), met with Mr. Euan Davidson, Head of the Sustainable Environment Programme at the United Kingdom Embassy in Tanzania, to discuss closer collaboration on these priorities.

“The Sixth Phase Government, under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has designed national strategies and plans addressing environmental and climate issues. We need strong support and collaboration from development partners to implement them effectively,” Dr. Muyungi said.

He pointed to Tanzania Development Vision 2050 as a central framework.

“The third pillar focuses on environmental conservation and climate resilience. It lays the foundation for Tanzania to reach upper-middle-income status by 2050,” he explained.

Dr. Muyungi highlighted the government’s efforts to expand carbon trading.

Tanzania has established the National Carbon Monitoring Centre (NCMC), which now operates with a board of directors and a technical committee to assess carbon projects.

"Our regulations and guidelines already provide a clear path for both national and international stakeholders,” he noted.

The government also promotes clean cooking solutions to reduce environmental impact.

“President Samia Suluhu Hassan leads this campaign nationally and internationally, reinforcing our broader environmental priorities,” Dr. Muyungi said.

He added that Tanzania continues implementing the third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3) to cut greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen climate resilience.

The NDC 3 reflects Tanzania’s commitment to sustainable development and climate action.

Mr. Davidson welcomed Tanzania’s initiatives and pledged the UK Embassy’s support.

“We stand ready to collaborate with the Office of the Vice President on the blue economy, carbon trading, clean cooking energy technologies, and the finalization of the national climate contribution,” he said.

The meeting demonstrates Tanzania’s proactive approach to aligning national environmental goals with international cooperation, a move that experts believe will accelerate progress toward climate resilience and sustainable growth.
