Gamondi disappointed after Taifa Stars’ defeat to Liechtenstein

Taifa Stars head coach Miguel Gamondi has expressed deep disappointment after Tanzania’s national football team suffered a 1–0 defeat against Liechtenstein in an international friendly match played on March 26 in Kigali, Rwanda.

The match was part of the FIFA Series international friendly tournament, where Tanzania was aiming to secure a win and strengthen its preparations for upcoming international competitions.

However, despite showing good control of the game and creating several scoring opportunities, Taifa Stars failed to convert their chances and were punished by a single goal from the European side.

Speaking after the match, Gamondi said the result was painful for him and the entire team, particularly because they created many opportunities but failed to score.

The Argentine coach explained that Taifa Stars dominated large parts of the game, especially during the first half, but poor finishing in front of goal prevented them from taking the lead.

He noted that his players played attractive football and maintained possession, but the inability to convert clear chances ultimately cost them the match.

Gamondi said the team must now focus on improving its finishing as it prepares for the next friendly match against Macau and other upcoming international competitions.

He also criticized the playing style of their opponents, accusing them of deliberately wasting time during the match.

Gamondi said he was surprised to see such tactics from a European team, noting that he had previously associated time-wasting more with African football.

The coach also questioned the referee’s decision to add only two minutes of stoppage time in the first half despite several interruptions.

He said the goalless result at halftime was already frustrating because his team had created enough chances to score and take control of the match.

According to him, Taifa Stars should have returned to the pitch with stronger determination to score early in the second half.

Gamondi added that the defeat hurts even more because the team had raised the expectations of Tanzanian fans who were hoping to see a victory.

Taifa Stars midfielder Novatus Dismas described the result as an important lesson for the team as it prepares for future matches.

He said the players performed well and managed to control the ball for long periods, but they failed to maintain focus after conceding the goal.

Dismas admitted that some players may not have been fully prepared, possibly believing that Tanzania would win the match easily.

He said that mindset affected the team’s readiness and contributed to the disappointing result.

The midfielder emphasized that the defeat should serve as a wake-up call for the team to correct its mistakes and improve performance in the next matches.

Meanwhile, the Liechtenstein coach praised his players for their hard work and determination throughout the match.

He said his team fought strongly for the full 90 minutes and executed their game plan effectively to secure the victory.

The coach acknowledged that Tanzania is a strong team with talented players, which required his side to remain disciplined in both defense and attack.

He said their determination and teamwork enabled them to achieve an important win.

The victory also gives Liechtenstein the opportunity to play in the final of the tournament against Aruba.

For Taifa Stars, the defeat serves as a reminder of the importance of taking scoring opportunities and maintaining concentration throughout the match as the team continues to prepare for future international competitions.
