Ambassador Baraka Luvanda, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Vice President for Environment, has praised the National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) for its effective and responsible management of Tanzania’s environmental resources.

Speaking during his first visit to NEMC offices in Mikocheni, Dar es Salaam, since his appointment, Ambassador Luvanda said the visit aimed to engage with staff and express his commitment to advancing the country’s environmental agenda, a critical pillar of the National Development Vision 2050.

“I am impressed to see you performing your duties diligently. This office is clearly home to committed professionals who understand the importance of your responsibilities. The President is closely monitoring your work, and your role is vital to our nation’s development,” he said.

He encouraged NEMC staff to continue working with dedication and integrity, ensuring that environmental resources are managed for both current and future generations.

“You have demonstrated that you can carry out your responsibilities with professionalism and ethical standards. I am pleased to see these values in action,” he added.

NEMC Director General, Dr. Immaculate Sware Semesi, welcomed Ambassador Luvanda and briefed him on the council’s responsibilities under the Environmental Management Act of 2004.

These include protecting the environment, conducting Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), monitoring development projects, raising public awareness, advising the government, controlling pollution, handling environmental complaints, and enforcing environmental laws.

Dr. Sware assured the Deputy Permanent-General that NEMC staff remain committed to executing their duties professionally and collaborating fully to support Tanzania’s sustainable development goals.
