The Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba, has instructed the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to ensure that customs operations at the Tarakea border in Rombo District, Kilimanjaro Region, run 24 hours a day to ease trade for the local population.
Hon. Nchemba gave the directive on February 19, 2026, while addressing citizens during a public meeting held at Sabasaba grounds in the district.
He emphasized that the government does not foresee any challenges in having TRA staff available to work around the clock. He stressed that public institutions must keep pace with the activities of citizens.
“We cannot have our citizens working while the government is asleep,” said the Prime Minister.
In another directive, the Prime Minister ordered the immediate commencement of construction for the Tarakea border post once compensation payments to local residents who occupied the land are completed.
Earlier, the Kilimanjaro Regional TRA Manager, Mr. James Jilala, informed the Prime Minister that the land valuation process is in its final stages and is expected to be completed within 10 days.
He added that once the valuation is complete, compensation payments to residents will begin immediately to pave the way for the construction of this important border facility.
The move is expected to boost cross-border trade, increase government revenue, and stimulate economic growth for residents of the area and neighboring regions.
