The Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania in Comoros has been asked to coordinate efforts to establish a Swahili journalists and broadcasters’ association, a move aimed at promoting the Kiswahili language and strengthening regional media collaboration.
Tanzania’s Ambassador to Comoros, Mr Saidi Yakubu, held discussions with veteran Comorian journalist Mr Rachidi Ali, who presented a formal request from local media practitioners seeking to form the Swahili Journalists and Broadcasters Association.
Mr Ali said there is a growing number of journalists in Comoros who have a strong interest in Kiswahili and are encouraged by the Tanzanian Embassy’s ongoing initiatives to promote the language in the country.
He noted that the proposed association would provide a structured platform to unite journalists and broadcasters who already use Kiswahili, while also encouraging others to learn and adopt the language in their professional work.
He added that support in coordination and engagement with relevant institutions would be critical to the successful establishment of the association and its long-term sustainability.
In response, Ambassador Yakubu commended Comorian journalists for their professionalism, competence and commitment to Kiswahili, describing the language as an important cultural and communication bridge in the region.
He said the Tanzanian Embassy has consistently engaged with media practitioners in Comoros and remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote Kiswahili.
The Ambassador assured Mr Ali that the request would be followed up in collaboration with Comorian authorities and other stakeholders, with the objective of advancing the development and wider use of Kiswahili in the country.
Kiswahili continues to gain prominence across Africa and globally, and initiatives such as the proposed association are viewed as key to deepening cultural ties and media cooperation between Tanzania and Comoros.
