The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, held high-level talks today with the Indian Ambassador to Tanzania, Bashwadip Dey, at the State House in Dar es Salaam.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in strategic sectors vital to both countries’ development agendas.
The meeting emphasized collaboration in health, water, education, trade, investment, as well as defense and security.
Both leaders agreed to enhance existing initiatives and explore new areas for mutually beneficial partnerships.
Tanzania and India share a long-standing diplomatic relationship dating back to Tanzania’s independence.
India established its embassy in Dar es Salaam in 1961, shortly before Tanzania opened its mission in India in 1962.
The relationship grew significantly in 2023 following an official visit by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to India, elevating bilateral ties to a strategic partnership.
India has played a pivotal role in supporting Tanzania’s development programs, particularly in the water and health sectors.
Contributions include infrastructure projects, medical equipment provision, and capacity-building programs aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery across the country.
On the trade front, India is Tanzania’s third-largest trading partner globally. Tanzanian exports to India include cashew nuts, groundnuts, legumes, precious stones, cotton, cloves, tea, leather, timber, and wood products, reflecting the diversity of the country’s export base.
The discussions underscored both countries’ commitment to deepening economic, social, and security cooperation.
Strengthened partnerships are expected to boost investment opportunities, enhance service delivery, and support sustainable growth for Tanzania and India alike.
Dr. Nchimbi and Dey reaffirmed that continued collaboration would reinforce the longstanding friendship between the two nations and provide tangible benefits for citizens through improved infrastructure, trade, and social development programs.
