The Government, through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), is implementing a TZS 73.8 billion project to extend electricity to 527 villages in Tanga Region, in a major push to expand energy access and stimulate rural economic growth.

The project was unveiled on January 29, 2026, in Tanga City by REA Director General, Engineer Hassan Saidy, during the official introduction of the contractors awarded the tender Giza Cable Industries and Energy Service Limited at the Regional Commissioner’s Office.

Engineer Saidy said the project is a significant milestone in the Government’s rural electrification agenda, noting that contractors have been directed to deploy operational teams in almost every district to ensure effective and timely implementation.

“We are here to introduce the contractors who will implement this large-scale project to supply electricity to 527 villages in Tanga Region. We have issued clear instructions, including the requirement to establish teams that will work closely with each district,” he said.

He also warned contractors to uphold professionalism and integrity, stressing that corruption, abusive language, or any form of misconduct toward citizens will not be tolerated.

“Anyone implementing a Government project must behave like a public servant. The use of offensive language is unacceptable, and any attempt to bribe or exploit citizens could lead to termination of the contract,” Engineer Saidy emphasized.

Acting Tanga Regional Commissioner, Dadi Kolimba, praised the Government for financing the project, describing it as a strategic investment that will open up new economic opportunities in rural communities.

“With these two contractors set to implement the electrification of 527 villages, a total of TZS 73.8 billion will be invested in this region. We have every reason to commend President Samia Suluhu Hassan for making funds available for this critical development project,” Kolimba said.

He urged the contractors to complete the project within the agreed timeframe and called on residents to cooperate fully to ensure the project achieves its intended goals.

The rural electrification initiative is expected to boost small businesses, improve health and education services, enhance productivity, and raise living standards across Tanga Region, reinforcing the Government’s broader agenda of inclusive and sustainable national development.
