Tanzania has taken part in the Third Meeting of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government Special Oversight Committee on Institutional Reforms, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the continental body and advancing Africa’s long-term development agenda.
The meeting, held virtually on January 29, 2026, saw Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation (East African Affairs) James Millya represent President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Chaired by Kenyan President William Ruto, who also heads the Oversight Committee, the session reviewed proposals and member states’ contributions on improving the effectiveness, governance and performance of AU institutions.
Discussions centred on key reform priorities, including strengthening good governance, promoting peace and security across the continent, improving institutional efficiency, ensuring sustainable financing, and simplifying decision-making processes within the Union.
The reforms are also intended to enhance the AU’s ability to implement Africa’s Agenda 2063, the continent’s long-term strategic framework for inclusive growth, sustainable development and greater regional integration.
By participating in the meeting, Tanzania reiterated its support for the AU reform process and its broader vision of building a stronger, more responsive and results-driven continental organisation capable of addressing Africa’s political, economic and security challenges.
