Goncalves says Yanga face Al Ahly without fear confidently

Young Africans SC (Yanga) head coach Pedro Gonçalves has declared that his side will approach their CAF Champions League group-stage opener with confidence rather than fear as they prepare to face African giants Al Ahly in Egypt.

Gonçalves acknowledged the stature, history, and continental dominance of their opponents, but insisted that Yanga’s ambition to grow into one of Africa’s elite clubs requires courage, belief, and an attacking mindset.

“We know we are playing against the biggest club in Africa, the Club of the Century, and that deserves respect. But if we want to be part of African football history, this is not about being afraid; it is about playing football,” said Gonçalves.

The Portuguese tactician stressed that Yanga has prepared thoroughly for the challenge and will step onto the pitch determined to compete at the highest level and push for victory.

“At the end of the day, we come to play and try to beat our opponents. To reach the top, you must face the best teams. I believe in the quality of our squad and the hunger of our players to give everything for the badge,” he added.

Gonçalves also admitted that their group presents a significant test due to the presence of teams with deep-rooted success in African competitions.

However, he said Yanga remains focused on long-term growth, consistency, and building a strong continental reputation.

He noted that after collecting four points from their opening matches, the club remains firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages.

Meanwhile, Yanga midfielder Allan Okello said the clash will demand exceptional discipline, focus, and unity, given the experience, depth, and tactical strength of their opponents.

“We are playing against a very experienced team with top-level players and a strong bench. It is important for us to stay united, remain focused, and fight until the final whistle,” Okello said.

He added that in modern football, the smallest margins often decide matches, emphasizing the need to use scoring opportunities efficiently while minimizing errors.

“We will need discipline, concentration, and smart decision-making. We respect our opponents, but we also believe in our own ability. Every match is an opportunity to learn, improve, and grow,” he said.

Beyond Yanga’s high-profile encounter, this weekend’s CAF Champions League action will feature several major fixtures across the continent, including clashes involving Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Hilal, ES Tunis against Simba, and RS Berkane facing Pyramids FC, among others.

The CAF Confederation Cup will also deliver exciting matchups, with Tanzanian sides Azam and Singida Black Stars in action alongside heavyweight clubs such as Zamalek, Wydad, and Kaizer Chiefs.
