The National Boxing Club Championship is set to take center stage in Tanga from September 15 to 20, with preparations now in their final stages, organizers confirmed today.
Speaking to journalists, President of the Tanzania Boxing Federation (BFT), Willilo Lukelo, said the organizing team, together with regional and district boxing officials, will complete the final arrangements today to ensure a smooth event.
“We are seeing a strong turnout from clubs across the country, including military and civilian teams from Tanga and other regions. Preparations are on track to ensure a successful championship and to crown this season’s champion. The defending champion is JKT,” Lukelo said.
The federation has received key office equipment, including laptops and printers, from a partner who will be formally introduced during the tournament.
BFT Secretary-General Makore Mashaga urged all participating clubs to submit their player and management lists by September 15.
“This allows the organizing committee to finalize arrangements. Health screenings for participants will be held on the morning of September 16, followed by the official start of the competition,” he said.
Mashaga also noted that while the federation is grateful for the support received, more assistance is still needed.
BFT is seeking additional office equipment, modern office space, boxing rings, bags, gloves, and funding to fully prepare for international competitions, including the upcoming Third African Regional Championship on October 14 in Kenya.
Yusuf Ndanga, representing one of the tournament’s partners, said his organization will continue supporting BFT, particularly in investments for official apparel and boxing infrastructure.
“We are committed to working with the government and local and international partners to ensure a successful championship,” he said.
Asha George, Chairperson of the BFT Women’s Committee, encouraged parents of talented girls to support them in boxing, highlighting the tournament as a unique opportunity to develop young athletes.
Meanwhile, Samwel Kapungu, head coach of the national boxing team, said the championship will help identify new talent and potential players to represent Tanzania on the international stage.
