Zanzibar launches digital residential addressing system

Zanzibar has launched a new digital residential addressing system designed to improve service delivery and simplify the identification of households across the islands.

The launch was held on Saturday in Mjini Magharibi Region, officiated by the Second Vice President of Zanzibar, Hemed Suleiman Abdulla.

The initiative provides residents with a digital identification code, which will be used for communication, planning, and access to key government services.

Authorities say the system is a major step towards strengthening governance through digital transformation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament and Coordination), Ummy Nderiananga, commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi for championing the use of technology to make public services more accessible.

“I commend our leaders for ensuring that services reach citizens more efficiently through technology. This system will ease residential identification and enhance government service delivery,” Ms. Ummy said.

She also applauded ministries from both the Union Government and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar for their collaboration, which made the project possible.

Officials explained that the system is expected to support national development in several areas, including urban planning, healthcare, security, and business operations.

It will also enhance emergency response by allowing authorities to locate residents more quickly and accurately.

The government has called on citizens to embrace the new system, noting that it will reduce bureaucracy and open new opportunities for digital innovation in Zanzibar.
