The Government, through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), has intensified efforts to promote and facilitate the use of clean cooking energy among the personnel of Jeshi la Kujenga Taifa (JKT).
This initiative supports the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy 2024–2034 aimed at reducing dependence on polluting fuels and improving environmental and public health.
Speaking at a training session for representatives from 22 JKT units benefiting from the program at the 834KJ Youth Camp in Makutupora, Dodoma, Acting Head of JKT Administration, Colonel Juma Mrai, underscored the directive from President Samia Suluhu Hassan to all institutions serving more than 100 people to transition from traditional, harmful energy sources to cleaner alternatives.
“This project embodies the President’s vision to safeguard our environment and enhance health standards by shifting to clean cooking energy,” Colonel Mrai said.
He commended REA for enabling JKT to implement clean energy projects valued at TZS 4.37 billion, accounting for 76 percent of the agency’s support in the sector.
Under this initiative, JKT camps have received 60 alternative charcoal production machines, 291 improved cooking stoves, 180 LPG gas systems complete with accessories, 220 tons of sustainable alternative charcoal, and nine gasification units.
The project also includes training for 50,000 young personnel to build their capacity in clean energy use.
Colonel Mrai called on responsible officers to maximize the use of these technologies and urged continuous education to identify and resolve challenges related to clean cooking energy, ensuring the projects deliver maximum benefit to the nation.
REA’s Director of Renewable and Alternative Energy Technologies, Mr. Advera Mwijage, noted that the training is designed to empower JKT officers and soldiers to become ambassadors for clean energy within their workplaces.
He highlighted that the skills gained will be critical for managing and sustaining clean cooking energy systems effectively.
“We commend JKT’s commitment to the project and pledge full support to ensure its timely completion,” said Mr. Mwijage.
Additionally, REA has approved over TZS 800 million to supply 7,000 JKT personnel with 15-kilogram LPG cylinders and two-burner stoves each, reinforcing the shift towards clean cooking energy at the individual level.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in Tanzania’s drive to promote environmental sustainability and improve health through cleaner energy solutions.
