The Mkwawa Rally was officially launched in Morogoro on Saturday, drawing 14 competitors from across the country as the motor sport enters its third season.
Organised by Mount Uluguru Club and sponsored by the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) together with other partners, including Mkwawa, the rally is seen as a key build-up to the Africa Rally Championship scheduled for December this year.
The opening ceremony was held at the Morogoro Tree Plantation where participants, officials, and motor sport fans gathered for the event.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Mohammed Msalu from the Morogoro Seed Centre underlined the rally’s role in linking conservation with sporting activities.
“This is more than just a race. It is an opportunity for people to witness the results of conservation and enjoy the natural attractions in the Uluguru Mountains,” he said, mentioning rare species such as the grasshopper marked with the colours of the national flag.
Apart from the races, the rally has been designed to provide entertainment and tourism experiences, including outdoor barbecue sessions and hospitality services for visitors—initiatives expected to boost domestic tourism and strengthen the local economy.
Morogoro District Commissioner, Mr Mussa Kilakala, said the event continues to play a major role in promoting the region’s economic development.
“Morogoro is steadily building its reputation as a hub for motor sports and tourism. Each year, when this rally is held, hotels, small businesses, and tourism services benefit significantly,” he noted.
The competition will resume on Sunday, August 17, and conclude with the grand finale at the Morogoro Tree Plantation.
