Government reaffirms commitment to attracting sports investors

The government has pledged to continue creating a conducive environment for investors committed to developing Tanzania’s sports sector.

Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, made the assurance on August 11, 2025, during the signing of a TSh 21.7 billion sponsorship agreement between Yanga SC and SportPesa. The three-year deal was sealed at Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam.

Mwinjuma hailed the contribution of investors in advancing national sports goals, noting the importance of collaboration between the public sector, private companies, and financial institutions.

“I commend Yanga and SportPesa for sustaining an eight-year partnership that has delivered remarkable results,” he said.

“The government values partnerships with companies such as SportPesa, Azam, NBC, GSM, CRDB and others, whose support has strengthened sports in the country.”he added

He assured investors that the government will remain a reliable partner, even when challenges arise, and will keep the doors open for constructive collaboration.

SportPesa Board Chairman, Abbas Tarimba, said the deal guarantees Yanga annual funding to help them compete strongly in continental tournaments, with the ambition of winning the CAF Champions League.

Yanga SC President, Engineer Hersi Said, thanked SportPesa for their continued backing, which he said has produced visible results both for the club and Tanzanian football.

“Our players’ strong performance in CHAN 2024 reflects the benefits of this partnership,” Hersi said.

“Before SportPesa came on board, Yanga struggled to attract quality players and fund travel despite the club’s long-standing reputation.”he added

The new sponsorship marks another chapter in one of Tanzanian football’s most enduring partnerships, aimed at elevating the country’s presence in African football.
