Finance Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has commended Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) Commissioner General CPA Yusuph Juma Mwenda for internalising and effectively implementing President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s philosophy of non-coercive tax collection.
Dr Nchemba made the remarks on June 24, 2025, in Parliament while wrapping up the debate on the national budget for the 2025/26 financial year. He said since Mwenda’s appointment, the tax authority has achieved significant revenue collection milestones without triggering public complaints or reports of heavy-handed enforcement.
“Previously, Members of Parliament raised numerous concerns from citizens about how taxes were being collected. Today, I rarely hear such complaints—yet revenue performance has improved. This shows the Commissioner General understands and upholds the President’s vision,” Dr Nchemba said.
He emphasised that the current approach to tax administration reflects a leadership style that prioritises fairness, trust-building, and voluntary compliance—core values championed by President Samia.
In addition to applauding the TRA leadership, the Finance Minister also paid tribute to the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, Dr Natu Mwamba, her deputies, and Bank of Tanzania (BoT) Governor Emmanuel Tutuba for their stewardship of the country’s fiscal and monetary policies.
He noted that their collective efforts, alongside other institutions under the Ministry, have contributed to macroeconomic stability and enhanced domestic revenue mobilisation.
“The smooth coordination between these institutions is a cornerstone of our economic resilience. Their dedication continues to support Tanzania’s growth trajectory,” he said.
The 2025/26 national budget debate, which concluded this week in Dodoma, focused heavily on domestic resource mobilisation, inclusive growth, and strengthening public service delivery.
