The government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding sports infrastructure particularly in basketball as part of its broader strategy to elevate the sport’s profile both nationally and internationally.
Speaking during the official opening of the CRDB Taifa Cup Basketball Tournament at Chinangali grounds in Dodoma, Deputy Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, emphasized the government's intention to provide world-class facilities that will allow Tanzania to host major international competitions such as the Basketball Africa League (BAL).
The tournament, which kicked off on June 24 and runs through July 4, has attracted 36 teams men’s and women’s from across mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.
"The government fully recognizes the importance of basketball in youth development and nation-building. As part of our six priority sports, basketball is receiving significant attention, and we are currently constructing a modern indoor sports arena in Dar es Salaam," Mwinjuma said.
He stressed that the government remains the country’s leading stakeholder in infrastructure development and will continue investing in quality sports facilities to promote competitiveness and talent development.
Mwinjuma also extended appreciation to CRDB Bank, the main sponsor of the tournament, for its consistent support of the sport.
He praised the bank’s contributions toward athlete development through scholarships, mentorship, and employment opportunities for outstanding players.
“We thank CRDB for not only sponsoring this tournament but for also taking the lead in empowering young athletes through education and job creation. We encourage other corporate players to emulate this model,” he said.
The Deputy Minister urged players to remain disciplined and dedicated, assuring them that the government stands ready to support their growth and ambitions.
Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) President Michael Kadebe echoed the government’s sentiments, acknowledging the fruitful partnership between the public and private sectors in advancing basketball in the country.
“We are grateful to the government for standing shoulder to shoulder with us. The facilities provided here in Dodoma are a testament to that support,” said Kadebe.
He noted the growing popularity of basketball in Tanzania, highlighting recent achievements including awards for Best Coach and Best Young Female Player.
“So far, 76 players have received academic scholarships through CRDB’s support, and many of them have secured employment opportunities through the sport,” he added.
Kadebe called on more sponsors to come forward and invest in basketball, saying increased private sector involvement is crucial to sustaining the momentum and expanding opportunities for young talent.
