The government has signed 12 new contracts for the implementation of the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness Project (TACTIC), targeting improved transport and economic infrastructure in 11 towns across mainland Tanzania.
Speaking during the contract signing ceremony held in Dodoma, Minister of State in the President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI), Hon. Mohamed Mchengerwa, said the projects will enhance transportation and mobility while also strengthening the business environment in the targeted urban areas.
The towns benefiting from this phase include Morogoro, Songea, Tanga, Korogwe, Babati, Shinyanga, Bukoba, Bariadi, Lindi, Iringa, and Njombe.
“These projects are not only about roads and infrastructure; they are about unlocking economic opportunities. They will improve the conditions for trade and investment in our towns and cities,” said Mchengerwa.
He stressed that the government is committed to timely implementation, citing the availability of funds as a non-issue. He issued a stern warning to contractors who delay project execution.
“We have no budget constraints, so I do not expect to see any contractor dragging their feet. Some contractors have a habit of diverting project funds to other engagements after being paid — that will not be tolerated,” he said firmly.
Minister Mchengerwa also vowed to terminate contracts of any contractor found misappropriating project resources, stating that such behavior undermines national development efforts.
The TACTIC initiative is being implemented in 45 towns across mainland Tanzania, with the aim of constructing tarmacked roads, drainage systems, street lighting, modern markets, bus and minibus terminals, recreational parks, and ferry terminals.
The projects are supported by a concessional loan of approximately USD 410 million from the World Bank, excluding Value Added Tax (VAT).
“This is a strategic investment in our urban future,” Mchengerwa concluded, reiterating the government's resolve to ensure efficiency, accountability, and impact in the delivery of the projects.
