Yanga have booked their place in the next round of the Caf Champions League after defeating Botswana’s Gaborone United 2-1 in the second leg at Azam Complex, Chamazi, on Saturday.
The victory saw the Tanzanian champions progress 3-2 on aggregate, having drawn 1-1 with Gaborone United in the first leg in Botswana.
Yanga needed just seven minutes to take control of the match, with striker Peter Shalulile finding the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The early goal settled Yanga, who controlled much of the game while looking for another goal to strengthen their position in the tie.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 84th minute when Cheikh Touré doubled the advantage, putting Yanga 2-0 ahead and giving the hosts a comfortable cushion.
Gaborone United responded almost immediately, with Lebogano Ditsele reducing the deficit three minutes later.
The visitors, however, could not find the equaliser before the final whistle as Yanga held on to secure a 2-1 victory and complete a 3-2 aggregate triumph.
The result extends Yanga’s continental campaign and keeps alive their hopes of making a deeper run in Africa’s premier club competition.
The focus now shifts to Simba and Singida Black Stars, who will be in action on Sunday as Tanzania’s other representatives seek to join Yanga in the next round of continental competitions.
