The Uhuru Torch team has approved 11 development projects worth Sh4.1 billion in Nzega District, including investments in education, health, roads and water services.
The approval came as the 2026 Uhuru Torch tour concluded its activities in Nzega on Saturday before moving to neighbouring Igunga District.
Nzega District Commissioner Naitapwaki Lemea Tukai said the projects, implemented by Nzega District Council and Nzega Town Council, had been inspected and approved during the torch's visit.
Among the projects approved in Nzega District Council were Ndala Secondary School, a human medicine shop in Kichima and the Ukombozi youth project.
Other projects included a patients' ward at Busondo Health Centre, the Mwambaha-Lubisu road, where a foundation stone was laid, and Mwabangu Secondary School.
In Nzega Town Council, the torch team approved the Kitangiri Village office and Nkuba Hotel projects.
It also inaugurated two classrooms at Hussein Bashe Secondary School, the Nyasa dispensary project and an expansion of the Nzega water treatment system.
The team also inaugurated the Lumambo-Kitongo road, which has been upgraded to tarmac standard.
Speaking during the handover of the torch at Ziba Secondary School grounds, Ms Tukai said the projects reflected ongoing efforts to improve essential services and infrastructure in the area.
“We thank you very much. Goodbye to all those who participated in the national Uhuru Torch race. We welcome you back,” she said.
National Uhuru Torch race leader for 2026, Wazo Michael Mwang’onda, commended Nzega leaders and residents for supporting the programme during its two-day visit.
“We congratulate Nzega for making good use of the 2026 Uhuru Torch. Leaders and residents each played their part. Congratulations,” Mr Mwang’onda said.
Ms Tukai handed over the torch to Igunga District Commissioner Sauda Mtondoo, signalling the continuation of the nationwide tour.
The 2026 Uhuru Torch campaign is being conducted under the theme: “Tanzania is ours all; let us unite to bring development.”
