Residents and businesses in parts of Nzega town are set to benefit from improved transport after the Uhuru Torch launched a 1.75-kilometre tarmac road linking Lumambo and Kitongo.
The Sh1.75 billion project in Nzega Urban West Ward is expected to improve the movement of people and goods, lower transport costs and support economic activity in the town and surrounding areas.
Nzega District manager of the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), Engineer Haruna Mbagalla, said the project was funded by the central government and was designed to address transport challenges in the growing town.
“The project cost is Sh1,751,051,480, with the funds provided by the central government,” Engineer Mbagalla said during the launch.
Construction of the road began on May 12, 2024, and is scheduled for completion on December 31, 2026. Samota Transport Company Ltd is the contractor.
Mr Mbagalla said the improved road would make it easier for residents to travel and transport goods, while also reducing the cost of doing business.
He said the project would also contribute to the development of Nzega town and improve its appearance.
Nzega District Commissioner Naitapwaki Lemea Tukai thanked the government for allocating funds for the construction and upgrading of roads in the town.
National Uhuru Torch coordinator for 2026, Wazo Michael Mwang’onda, commended TARURA for the project, saying residents in areas outside the town centre would also benefit from the improved road.
“Although this road is on the outskirts of Nzega, people will use it and benefit from it. It is attractive, and the value of the money invested corresponds with its quality,” Mr Mwang’onda said.
The 2026 Uhuru Torch campaign is being conducted under the theme “Tanzania is Ours All; Let Us Work Together to Bring Development.”
