Tanzania is strengthening its capacity to detect and respond to disease outbreaks through training of laboratory experts on proper handling and reporting of medical samples.
The training, which continued in Morogoro on September 10, 2026, brought together laboratory professionals from public and private health facilities in Tanga, Morogoro, Lindi, Mtwara, Pwani and Kilimanjaro regions.
The participants are being equipped with practical and theoretical skills in collecting, transporting and tracking samples, measures considered critical to ensuring accurate and timely laboratory reports.
Accurate laboratory information enables health authorities to identify diseases early and make informed decisions on treatment, prevention and control, particularly when dealing with outbreaks.
The training is being conducted by the Ministry of Health through the Department of Disease Diagnostic Services and Medical Equipment Maintenance in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The programme seeks to strengthen laboratory-based disease surveillance by improving the ability of health facilities to manage samples and submit reliable reports.
Improved sample management is expected to help health authorities detect potential outbreaks more quickly, monitor the spread of diseases and coordinate timely responses to protect communities.
The initiative comes as Tanzania continues to strengthen its disease surveillance systems and preparedness to respond to public health emergencies.
