The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has renovated staff housing and upgraded a water treatment plant at the Nyumba ya Mungu Hydropower Station, part of efforts to improve workers’ welfare and strengthen operations at the facility.
The renovated houses, originally built in 1969 when the power station started operations, were handed over to employees following major rehabilitation works aimed at improving living conditions for staff working at the station.
TANESCO Nyumba ya Mungu Human Resources Officer Neema Mwaisaka urged employees receiving the houses to maintain the facilities and protect the investment made by the utility.
She said significant resources had been committed to rehabilitating the houses, making proper maintenance essential to ensuring they remain useful for years to come.
The beneficiaries welcomed the improvements, saying better housing conditions would help improve their morale and enable them to perform their duties more effectively.
Speaking on behalf of the workers, Masasi Maduka said improved living conditions would encourage employees to devote themselves more fully to their responsibilities.
“Improving our living conditions will boost our morale and enable us to commit ourselves more fully to our responsibilities,” he said.
The power station also commissioned a modernised water treatment plant to supply treated water for human consumption and operational activities at the facility.
Nyumba ya Mungu Power Station Head of Unit, Engineer Andrea Shio, said TANESCO had rehabilitated and upgraded the plant to improve its efficiency and ensure a more reliable supply of treated water.
He commended the utility's management for investing in the facility, noting that the plant serves both the station's workforce and its operational requirements.
The upgrades come as TANESCO continues to invest in infrastructure supporting its electricity generation and distribution operations.
For workers at power-generating facilities, adequate housing, water and other essential services can directly affect their working environment and welfare.
At Nyumba ya Mungu, the improvements are expected to support staff morale while helping maintain efficient operations at one of Tanzania’s established hydropower facilities.
The investment also underscores the importance of maintaining ageing public infrastructure as Tanzania seeks to improve the reliability and efficiency of its electricity supply system.
