President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, has urged residents to take early precautions against the expected El Niño rains, particularly by avoiding flood-prone areas and following official weather and safety alerts.
Dr Mwinyi said on Friday that residents should not wait for heavy rains to begin before taking measures to protect themselves and their property.
He also directed government institutions to step up public awareness campaigns and ensure communities receive timely and accurate information on the expected weather conditions.
The President was speaking after Friday prayers at Masjid Swafaa in Gongoni, Urban West Region.
He urged residents to follow instructions issued by the government and relevant authorities, warning them to stay away from low-lying areas, waterways and other locations vulnerable to flooding.
Those living in areas considered dangerous should relocate when advised to do so, he said.
Dr Mwinyi also directed municipalities in both Unguja and Pemba to ensure drainage systems and waterways are cleared ahead of the rains to reduce the risk of flooding.
He said the government had prepared response measures, including strengthening rescue operations and ensuring timely assistance for people affected by disasters.
The government, he added, would also work to maintain access to essential services, food and medicines in the event of weather-related emergencies.
Dr Mwinyi called on all institutions involved in disaster preparedness and response to remain on standby so they can respond quickly to emergencies and provide assistance to affected communities.
The warning comes as authorities across the country intensify preparations for heavy rains associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon, with flooding among the key risks facing vulnerable communities.
