Mwinyi chairs Zanzibar meeting on drug control

President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, on Saturday chaired a meeting of the National Council for Control and Combating Drug Abuse as the government reviews measures to strengthen the fight against illicit drugs in the Isles.

The meeting was held at State House in Zanzibar on September 12, 2026, bringing together senior government officials, ministers and leaders of defence and security institutions.

Second Vice President of Zanzibar Hemed Suleiman Abdulla was among those who attended the meeting, which focused on strategies to control and combat drug abuse in Zanzibar.

The meeting also brought together ministers from various government ministries and heads of security organs, underscoring the need for coordination among institutions involved in tackling the drug problem.

The council discussed measures aimed at strengthening existing strategies to prevent the spread of illicit drugs and improve the government’s response to drug-related challenges.

The meeting comes as authorities continue to place emphasis on coordinated efforts involving government institutions and security agencies in addressing drug-related challenges in Zanzibar.
