Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Minister Paul Makonda has ordered a review of the contract governing Tanzania’s national football team jerseys, saying the newly advertised kits were not part of a process involving his ministry.
In a statement issued on Friday, September 18, 2026, the ministry said Mr Makonda did not recognise the advertisements for the new national team jerseys because the process to change the kits had not involved the ministry, despite his earlier directive issued in February.
Mr Makonda had directed that the national team jerseys be improved as Tanzania prepares to host major matches during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
According to the statement, the minister believes the Government’s investment in preparing national teams for international competitions should also generate wider benefits for the country.
He will therefore establish a committee to investigate the agreements between the jersey supplier and the relevant parties, with a focus on the benefits accruing to the national teams and the country.
The review will also examine whether the Government is getting value from the funds it invests in national teams and how opportunities from jersey sales can be used to contribute to the financing of national teams.
The move comes as Tanzania intensifies preparations for AFCON 2027, which is expected to place greater attention on the country’s football infrastructure, national teams and related commercial opportunities.
