The government has urged investors to channel more capital into Mafia Island’s tourism sector, saying improved investment could help the island attract more visitors and create economic opportunities for local communities.
Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Hamad Hassan Chande made the call in Mafia District while launching the Mafia Island Festival and marking 30 years since the establishment of the Mafia Island Marine Park.
Mr Chande said Mafia had a wide range of tourism attractions, including beaches along the Indian Ocean, marine resources and historical sites, but more investment and promotion were needed to fully develop their potential.
He encouraged both domestic and foreign investors to explore opportunities on the island, while urging Tanzanians to take the lead in investing in tourism-related businesses.
“We have many resources in our seas and islands. The seven islands in this district are a gift from God. We found them when we were born, so I urge you to use this opportunity to preserve, maintain and invest in this island. It is important that we start investing ourselves,” he said.
Mr Chande also urged young people in Mafia to acquire skills in driving and tour guiding, saying such training could create opportunities for self-employment and help increase their incomes from the tourism sector.
He called on the district authorities to continue organising marine sports festivals and other tourism events to increase the island’s visibility and encourage more visitors to explore its attractions.
According to Mr Chande, similar festivals should be organised in other regions and districts to showcase local tourism opportunities and support the government’s broader efforts to promote Tanzania as a tourism destination.
He linked the initiatives to President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s efforts to raise Tanzania’s profile internationally, including through The Royal Tour film, which showcases the country’s tourism attractions.
The deputy minister said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism would continue working with local government authorities, private-sector players, investors and communities to develop Mafia’s tourism potential while ensuring the conservation of its natural resources.
The anniversary of the Mafia Island Marine Park comes as the island continues to balance tourism development with the protection of its marine ecosystems, which underpin both conservation efforts and livelihoods in surrounding communities.
