Pupils at Mkwajuni Primary School in Lindi Municipality are set to get safer and better learning facilities after the government funded the construction of four classrooms and a head teacher’s office following storm damage that disrupted the school’s infrastructure.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), Prof Riziki Shemdoe, on Monday laid the foundation stone for the Sh96 million project, saying the intervention reflected the government’s response to urgent needs raised by communities.
The school was hit by a disaster on January 29, 2026, when two classrooms, the head teacher’s office, two teachers’ houses and student toilets were destroyed. Another classroom was damaged after a tree fell on it.
The project was initiated after Mchinga MP Salma Rashid Kikwete raised the matter in Parliament and appealed for urgent government assistance to restore the school’s facilities.
Prof Shemdoe said he subsequently directed the Lindi Municipal Director to ensure funds were made available quickly for the construction of the four classrooms.
“We sought approval from the President to secure funds to construct these four classrooms immediately, and today we have all witnessed four new classrooms and the head teacher’s office at Mkwajuni Primary School,” he said.
He said the government would provide additional funding for more classrooms at the school, with the aim of replacing older facilities located within a road reserve.
The additional construction is expected to address space constraints while improving safety for pupils and teachers.
Ms Kikwete thanked Prof Shemdoe for responding to the school’s needs, urging the government to support the construction of more classrooms and offices.
She said adequate facilities would give teachers better working conditions and provide pupils with a safer and more conducive environment for learning.
Lindi Regional Commissioner Adam Kighoma Malima thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for supporting development projects in the region and said the regional administration would continue working to improve services for residents.
During his September 14 visit to Lindi, Prof Shemdoe also inspected several development projects, including the Kilwa Masoko Fishing Port, a maternity ward and neonatal care unit at Kinyonga District Hospital, a primary school project at Mkunyule in Mandwanga Ward and Kitomanga ‘B’ Primary School.
