Communities living around Mkungunero Game Reserve in Kondoa District are seeing direct benefits from wildlife conservation, with the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) providing support to schools as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation with residents.
TAWA, through Mkungunero Game Reserve, on Thursday handed over 60 bags of cement, 190 exercise books, 15 sets of sports jerseys and two footballs to Kwadelo B Primary School and Itaswi Secondary School.
The support is aimed at improving learning and sports facilities while strengthening relations between conservation authorities and communities living near protected areas.
The 60 bags of cement will support construction and improvement of school infrastructure, while the exercise books and sports equipment will directly benefit pupils and students.
For communities living close to wildlife reserves, the relationship with conservation authorities can be strengthened when the benefits of protecting natural resources are visible in everyday life.
At the schools, the support is expected to contribute to better learning environments and give students improved access to sports activities, which can promote discipline, teamwork, physical fitness and talent development.
Mkungunero Game Reserve Community Relations Officer CII Tumaini Minja urged students to work hard in their studies, take care of the materials provided and become ambassadors for wildlife conservation.
The appeal is also intended to encourage young people to understand the link between protecting wildlife and safeguarding the natural resources that support their communities.
The cement donation comes amid preparations for possible heavy rains following warnings over El Niño conditions, adding an infrastructure component to the support provided to the schools.
Leaders of Kwadelo B Primary School, Itaswi Secondary School and Itaswi village welcomed the assistance and pledged to continue cooperating with TAWA.
The cooperation is significant for conservation because protecting wildlife involves more than managing animals and habitats.
